Free Advice

I have surrounded myself with computers for over 30 years, and have picked up a lot of knowledge by means of osmosis.  I’m more than happy to share that knowledge, but can’t afford to spend hours a day having the same conversation with different people.  So, if you’ve been directed to this page, please don’t be offended – I just need to be able to prioritize my time and be as efficient as I can.   The list below will continue to grow over time, so feel free to bookmark this page and check this page often!

  • Free software – Are you tired of buying Microsoft Word every time it gets updated?  Me, too.  Check out this page for information about FREE alternatives to Microsoft Office and other great software resources.
  • Virus removal – While one of my product offerings is removing viruses from computers, I also understand that there are many people who just want to do it themselves.  Read this article for more information on how to attempt to clean up your computer on your own.
  • Use Non-administrator accounts – Rather than continuing to dump money into anti-virus programs that don’t work, I suggest you configure your computer so that you don’t get the majority of the viruses in the first place.  Disclaimer: I’m not advising you to remove your anti-virus software.
  • Affordable Smartphone Cellular Service – At the end of 2011, I was invited to join in a beta testing group for a new cellular company called Ting.  We loved the service, and quickly moved all of our phones from Verizon to Ting.  It came with a price because we got nailed on early contract termination from Verizon, but we now have FOUR smart phones, all the data, text, and minutes we need, and are paying UNDER $80 per month for the plan.  There is no contract, no hidden fees, and absolutely no surprises.  The only hitch is that they run on the Sprint network, and data service is only available if you’re in the Sprint data coverage area.  Voice and text work everywhere at no additional cost.  Tethering is free, so you can hook up your computer with a USB cable or use the phone’s built-in portable WiFi hotspot.  None of this comes with any additional charges.  For this plan with Verizon, it would have run us well over $400 per month.  Ting is planning their public launch on February 1, 2012.  Enjoy!
